Here’s the draft of a cover letter that would be a little different. I’d love to know what you think. I would use it to apply to marketing positions, including with Procter & Gamble.
Dear (Potential Employer):
We humans seem to have an innate fear of making decisions. Call it fear of commitment. Call it worry about making the wrong choice. Or maybe it’s just easier to not do anything. Whatever it is, the greatest problem we have in sales, politics, public relations, or marketing is—fundamentally—getting others to make favorable decisions.
My life—my career, my education, and even my volunteer work—has revolved around helping others make decisions.
This summer I helped more than a thousand different Californians decide to take a political stand. Their letters swayed legislators to decide in favor of my employer’s positions. As a public relations professional, I’ve helped reporters decide to write stories. Those stories led readers to make decisions embracing the organizations I represented.
As a full-time volunteer for two years, I helped dozens of people decide to make permanent, life-altering decisions—the kind of decisions that involve changing habits, activities, friends, and lifestyles. Even as a high-school student, I earned the Eagle Scout award by helping community members decide to give blood and save lives.
The fundamental problem of marketing is not “How do we get the word out?” “How do we get people interested?” or even “How do we provide the best value?” The question is “How do we get people to make decisions that will benefit them and our company?”
If you hire me you’ll get someone who understands the natural barriers to decision making. You’ll get someone with experience removing or bypassing those barriers in a variety of situations and for a wide variety of people and products. In short, I can get to “yes.”
