My coworker recently got us free tickets to a premier of CBS’s new shows: “Gary Unmarried,” “The Ex List,” “Worst Week,” and “The Mentalist.” Here’s my thoughts in a nutshell:
- “Gary Unmarried” – We watched the writer and a couple of stars hit the red carpet. They had a panel and Q&A before the showings. Apparently the actors playing “Gary” and his ex have somewhat clashing styles off-screen, and it definitely translates on-screen into a convincing divorced couple and the tension in their relationship.
- “The Ex List” – An interesting concept with potential. However, inappropriateness ruins this one for me.
- “Worst Week” – Worse than watching a train wreck in slow motion. It’s like watching five passenger trains collide in stop-motion from every angle. Of course, that’s the point. The pilot had a some funny moments, but I could not imagine wanting to watch a new episode every week.
- “The Mentalist” – A modern spin on Sherlock Holmes, our hero used his talents to play psychic before turning to crime-fighting. This one has the potential to be cool like Numbers or lame like CSI-Miami. I couldn’t tell from the pilot which way it’s going to go, but I could see myself watching another episode of this one to find out.
One final thought–I’m disappointed with how standards of decency keep going downhill.
